Fwd: Coal Ash Hazardous Classification Hangs by a Thread
01/08/2010
- They're with us on this one, but we've really
got
to support a strong decision.
I just spoke with Jeff Stant,
one of the head attorneys working with the EPA to classify coal ash
as a hazardous
waste. Today he met with Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the EPA.
"Sounds
like they're on our side," he said, "but we're going to
need help." The
EPA has postponed their decision until the end of January, but they
are under extreme
pressure from the coal industry to compromise the hazardous
classification for a weaker "hybrid-hazardous"
classification that allows dangerous loopholes.
Unfortunately,
the normal public comment period produced little support. Our allies
in envinronmental legal defense have been working up to this moment
for decades! If there were ever a time that our calls and emails
could make a difference, the
time is now.
Stant specifically said we have to target Lisa Jackson, Administrator
of the EPA, and the Office of Management and Budget.
This
is
important. It only takes a few minutes. Take action now!
There
are two numbers:
202-395-3080 - Office of Management and Budget
202-564-4700 - Lisa Jackson's Office EPA
Simply
call and say: "I support classification of fly ash as a
hazardous
waste."
The
next 10 days are critical for us to weigh in as the EPA makes this
momentous decision.
